Vela<\/strong>, president of <strong>Texas A&amp;M University-Kingsville,<\/strong> <strong>Michele Minter<\/strong>, <strong>Princeton University<\/strong> vice provost for institutional equity and diversity, and <strong>Lorraine Hastings<\/strong>, vice president of the <strong>College Board<\/strong> at COE\u2019s annual conference in New York in September.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<div class=\"social-sharing-buttons coe-block absolute left\">\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about having an educator\u2019s heart,\u201d Vela told the 1,700 conferees assembled for the plenary session entitled \u201cWho Belongs on Campus Now?\u201d &nbsp;He\u2019s taken the research-based Caring Campus framework, which he called \u201ctransformational\u201d for community colleges, to his Hispanic-Serving Institution of 4,845 students. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re doing everything you can by your mission and encouraging students\u2019 voices,\u201d Vela said, \u201cyou\u2019re going to see tremendous results. &#8221; Caring Campus research has demonstrated that students who feel more connected to their campus environment are more likely to persist and graduate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We\u2019ve learned a lot about how to support students, especially low-income and first-gen students\u2026in the last decade, and we\u2019ve learned a lot from TRIO professionals. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Minter said that Princeton, an Ivy League institution with an undergraduate enrollment of 5,671, hadn\u2019t seen any immediate impact on its enrollment of students of color. However, she acknowledged that \u201cit\u2019s way too early to tell\u201d the long-term effects of the Supreme Court\u2019s 2023 ruling. She fears that it will have a chilling effect on applications from students of color. And she expressed concern about \u201cthe spillover impact\u201d of the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling on student support programs and scholarships dedicated to underrepresented students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To better assure that all students are adequately prepared for college, the College Board is working hard to expand access to AP-level classwork, said Hastings. Almost three-quarters of the 11,000 students recently taking the African American Studies exam scored three or higher on a 5-point scale. It was the first AP course for almost a third (29 percent) of the test-takers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked to specify which practices make campuses welcoming for low-income, first-generation students, and students with disabilities, all panelists spoke about the importance of elevating students\u2019 voices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<section id=\"block-476089968e48723f5fabaf1e3f06aa1f\" class=\"cta-pullout-wrapper cta-pullout alignfull coe-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"cta-pullout-inner wow animate fade-in-stagger\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"cta-text\">Click now to view photos from this thought-provoking session at COE&#8217;s Annual Conference.<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/s\/aHBqjBJVWJ\" target=\"_self\" class=\"acf-link button cta-pullout-button\" >VIEW PHOTOS<\/a>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<p>Minter stressed the importance of civic education, and Hastings agreed. \u201cWe can redirect students to organize and advocate for what they believe in,\u201d Hastings said. Minter noted that students can play a vital role in their education and that of their peers. She said programs such as \u201cnear-peer\u201d mentoring are powerful. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to all be done by us [faculty or administrators].\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Added Minter, \u201cWe\u2019ve learned a lot about how to support students, especially low-income and first-gen students\u2026in the last decade, and we\u2019ve learned a lot from TRIO professionals. We\u2019ve always tried to keep broadening and looking for new ways to support all students.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously president of San Antonio College, Vela said he \u201cgrew up in TRIO\u201d:&nbsp; his first post-graduate job was as an Upward Bound coordinator. He urged TRIO professionals to seize campus leadership roles, saying more should become college presidents. \u201cWe need more people to step up and do this. \u2026 The more, the better, especially in inner-city institutions that need strong leadership.
