COE, in partnership with NASPA&#8217;s Center for First-generation Success, initiated the National First-Generation College Celebration, observed annually on November 8, to honor the achievements of first-generation college students, expanding to include weeklong events for both undergraduates and graduates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/trio-history\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"acf-link link--inline wow\" >LEARN MORE<\/a>\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section\r\n\t\tclass=\"offset-media-text wow alignfull coe-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container offset-media-text__inner\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"row\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"offset-media-text__media wow column-2\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"offset-media-text__image to-square bg-img gradient-fill\"\r\n\t\t\t\t\tstyle=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/1970_office_of_education_student_support_services.jpg)\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"patterns-bg color-theme__bg align-bottom patterns-hash-wide\"><\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"offset-media-text__content column-2 wow animate fade-in-stagger\">\r\n\t<h2 class=\"kicker\">TRIO unifies admission criteria<\/h2>\t\t\t<p class=\"h2\">The TRIO community introduced the concept of the \u201cfirst-generation college student.\u201d<\/p>\t\t<div class=\"description\"><p>In the late 1970s, as Congress prepared to reauthorize the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA), TRIO leaders nationwide sought to unify the admission criteria for the programs. Until then, each program had different eligibility criteria, ranging from \u201crurally isolated\u201d to \u201cculturally disadvantaged.\u201d A working group called the National Coordinating Council of Educational Opportunity Associations \u2013 the pre-cursor to the Council for Opportunity in Education \u2013 introduced the idea of the \u201cfirst-generation college student\u201d as a universal criterion for admission to the TRIO programs during the hearings leading up to 1980 HEA reauthorization.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/celebrating-60-years-of-trio-excellence\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"acf-link button\" >A TIMELINE<\/a>\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section\r\n\t\tclass=\"offset-media-text wow alignfull coe-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container offset-media-text__inner\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"row reverse-content\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"offset-media-text__content column-2 wow animate fade-in-stagger\">\r\n\t<h2 class=\"kicker\">Law defines first-gen<\/h2>\t\t\t<p class=\"h2\">The term \u201cfirst-generation college student\u201d was first codified into law in the TRIO section of the Higher Education Act.<\/p>\t\t<div class=\"description\"><p>Following the recommendations of TRIO leaders, the 1980 HEA reauthorization included language in the TRIO section defining a \u201cfirst-generation college student\u201d as \u201can individual\u2026 whose parents did not complete a baccalaureate degree.\u201d (20 U.S.C. Since 2017, campuses across the country have marked this event on November 8, the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965.
