Wolanin intern, Cristalina Ramirez on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For three months, Cristalina Ramirez called Capitol Hill her home as she worked as the 2023 Thomas R. Wolanin Congressional Internship program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TRIO <strong>Student Support Services<\/strong> alum has organized constituent correspondence, answered essential calls, given Capitol tours, and attended hearings, briefings, and receptions while working in the office of <a href=\"https:\/\/jayapal.house.gov\/\">Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA)<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<div class=\"social-sharing-buttons coe-block absolute left\">\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<p>She said, what has astonished her most is \u201cbeing on the other end of advocacy\u2026where I\u2019m taking so many calls, reading so many emails, and meeting with people.\u201d Sitting alongside constituents and legislative staffers has taught her that \u201cthe most effective communication is\u2026starting with a direct ask and then saying why it\u2019s important\u2014then people are more inclined to listen.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<section id=\"block-ed8f462799b01e8d28526741e112b1f5\" class=\"cta-pullout-wrapper cta-pullout alignfull coe-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"cta-pullout-inner wow animate fade-in-stagger\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"cta-text\">The Council invites applicants for the 2024 Thomas R. Wolanin Congressional Internship. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 29, 2023.<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/thomas-r-wolanin-congressional-internship\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"acf-link button cta-pullout-button\" >LEARN MORE<\/a>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<p>The Wolanin Internship has opened many doors for Ramirez and made her more trusting of her dreams of pursuing a job in wildlife conservation from a government affairs lens.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramirez is no stranger to hard work, bringing a wealth of experience in human resources and volunteerism. As a first-generation student and the youngest of five children of migrant farm workers in rural Washington, she was committed to meeting educational and professional goals that her parents could not attain. While studying for a sociology degree at Washington State, she helped coordinate WSU\u2019s food security initiatives as an Americorps team member, mentored first-year students, and was active in student government and cultural organizations for Chicanx\/Latinx students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has worked as an intern for the United Farm Workers and, using an award from the WSU SSS program, was able to study abroad in Spain. After graduating in 2022, she served as an academic advisor in the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) that she was once part of.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramirez says she would \u201c100 percent\u201d encourage other TRIO students to pursue a D.C. internship.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI gained so much value\u2014knowing how our laws are made, how Congressional offices operate, what happens in briefings and hearings. So many people are coming to voice their concerns and needs, and wants\u2014and it\u2019s all so powerful. We\u2019re all just trying to make our little corner of the world better.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"slider-articles alignfull coe-block\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"slider-articles__intro
