The 33rd annual NSLC occurred in mid-June, but the students weren&#8217;t the only ones bubbling over with excitement. TRIO staff also commends NSLC for the experience it provided them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would encourage every TRIO professional to take this opportunity because it gives you a unique chance to grow as a person and as a professional,\u201d said <strong>Juan C. Rivera-Ramos<\/strong>, a TRIO alumnus and counselor for the <strong>University of Puerto Rico<\/strong>. He said he attended his first NSLC four years ago but learns something new every time he attends. \u201cIt\u2019s all about the students,\u201d he said. \u201cCounselors who attend get to be with diverse students from all over the country.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he noticed immediately that the NSLC this year had several students from <strong>Puerto Rico<\/strong>, and he made sure to meet them and welcome them. \u201cBut I also learned a lot from <strong>Alaska, Alabama,<\/strong> and <strong>New York<\/strong> students. The <strong>NSLC <\/strong>gives TRIO staff a wide perspective on what a student is living.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sydnie Romero<\/strong> agreed. A former TRIO student and current <strong>Upward Bound<\/strong> instructor at her alma mater, the Homestead campus of <strong>Miami Dade College<\/strong>, she said, \u201cSeeing the diversity was a joy in itself, and I would encourage other professionals to be a part of that.\u201d <strong>Romero <\/strong>said that she especially enjoyed seeing student leadership growth and how students felt freed from their roles at home. \u201cIntroverts became extroverts,\u201d she said of the students. She recalled one young man from <strong>Montana <\/strong>who said he didn\u2019t think that at home he could be so relaxed and as much himself as he was at the NSLC, to which a new friend from <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> spoke up and encouraged him to give it a try once he got home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<section id=\"block-418ab6590960402cbf11f11841b388d3\" class=\"cta-pullout-wrapper cta-pullout alignfull coe-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"cta-pullout-inner wow animate fade-in-stagger\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"cta-text\">COE sponsors a range of student opportunities for TRIO pre-college youth, college students, recent alumni, and adults.<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/student-opportunities\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"acf-link button cta-pullout-button\" >apply today<\/a>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents who started as strangers learned to respect and love each other during a couple of days,\u201d <strong>Rivera-Ramos<\/strong> said. \u201cThey learned a very different kind of leadership. It is collaborative and helps them grow as people.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both <strong>Rivera-Ramos<\/strong> and <strong>Romero <\/strong>thought the Mock Congress helped students showcase their strengths, some of which they didn\u2019t know they had. \u201cThe Mock Congress is the cornerstone of the event,\u201d <strong>Rivera-Ramos<\/strong> said. \u201cThe students debate diverse topics. Even during the presentations, they are so supportive. That is why NSLC is so transformational. It starts as a competition, but it ends up as a community project,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnly one group didn\u2019t finish their presentation in the two-minute limit,\u201d <strong>Romero <\/strong>said. \u201cBut every group did an amazing job. The students you didn\u2019t think would ever be a presenter took on that role and wanted to get their voices out there. Even those who said they were nervous stood up and did a good job,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rivera-Ramos<\/strong> summed up the experience he and other TRIO professionals had at the NSLC. \u201cYou have the opportunity to work with these smart and supportive kids. Students that can visit the Capitol and talk with their congress members, letting them know that TRIO works, and you see how they grow and transform themselves during the process,\u201d he said. \u201cThey arrive in D.C. scared and return to their hometowns as a different person. The whole experience of NSLC empowers them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"slider-articles alignfull coe-block\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"slider-articles__intro container\">\r\n\t\t\t<div encourage other professionals to be a part of that.\u201d Romero said that she especially enjoyed seeing student leadership growth and how students felt freed from their roles at home. \u201cIntroverts became extroverts,\u201d she said of the students.
