This year, nearly 200&nbsp;<strong>Talent Search, Upward Bound,<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Upward Bound Math-Science<\/strong>&nbsp;students from across the country,&nbsp;<strong>Puerto Rico<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>Guam&nbsp;<\/strong>came to&nbsp;<strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, to learn, be inspired, and share their stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first full day of the Leadership Congress began with welcoming remarks from&nbsp;<strong>Trinity Thorpe-Lubneuski<\/strong>, Senior Director of Strategic Communications and Research, Internet Essentials,&nbsp;<strong>Comcast Corporation<\/strong>. Thorpe-Lubneuski is an alumna of the&nbsp;<strong>Upward Bound<\/strong>&nbsp;program at the&nbsp;<strong>University of Wyoming<\/strong>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/news-impact\/blog\/transforming-lives-and-helping-end-intergenerational-poverty\/\">participated in NSLC in high school<\/a>. She told the students that they should all be proud, that they are now part of a cohort that could define the rest of their life\u2014because participating in NSLC changed her life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programming started with a rousing address by&nbsp;<strong>Calvin Mackie<\/strong>, president and founder of&nbsp;<strong>STEM NOLA<\/strong>. Mackie told the students that he doesn\u2019t care who is telling them no \u2014 \u201cYou\u2019ve got to say yes.\u201d \u201cIn the future, there won\u2019t be divisions of Black or white, rich or poor. There will only be people in the know and those who are not,\u201d he said. \u201cTRIO will be here in the future because we want you to be in the know.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mackie closed with a list of three things that students need to succeed. The first skillsets go beyond the skills you need to have to do your job so that you can pay your bills. The second is assets, people who are there for you. \u201cMoney is the lowest form of wealth,\u201d Mackie said. \u201cThe highest form is making a difference.\u201d The third thing needed is the right mindset. \u201cWithout this, the first two don\u2019t matter,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t let anyone or anything stop you from what you can do for yourself.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, in a workshop on selective colleges, students learned that it\u2019s more affordable to attend a selective college than a private 2-year college.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSelective schools have more money for grants and can offer better financial aid packages,\u201d said&nbsp;<strong>Kevin Hudson<\/strong>, assistant director for college opportunity at <strong>Princeton University<\/strong>. \u201cIn addition to financial aid, look at the wrap-around services offered,\u201d Hudson said. \u201cWhat programs does the school have that will help you succeed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The afternoon featured breakout sessions on superhero kindness, dressing for success, internships, and financial literacy. The day ended with preparation for the next day\u2019s visit to <strong>Capitol Hill<\/strong> and meeting with students\u2019 <strong>Members of Congress<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the last day, students participated in a Mock Congress for which they researched, wrote, and then debated a bill of legislation on a given topic. Some of the issues included: whether vaccinations should be a federal mandate, whether there should be a national gun registry, should the United States pay reparations to the descendants of the African slave trade, and whether adolescents should receive life sentences without parole. The winning team submitted a bill on whether the <strong>District of Columbia<\/strong> should receive statehood \u2014 they took the position that it should not. As a reward for their winning bill, each team member received a laptop \u2014 generously donated by <strong>Internet Essentials by<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Comcast<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2019 <a Some of the issues included: whether vaccinations should be a federal mandate, whether there should be a national gun registry, should the United States pay reparations to the descendants of the African slave trade, and whether adolescents should receive life sentences without parole. The winning team submitted a bill on whether the District of Columbia should receive statehood \u2014 they took the position that it should not.
