The five are leaders in politics, Internet communications, non-profit advocacy, scholarly research, and one best-selling author.<br><br>The TRIO Achiever Award honors the accomplishments after college of individuals who obtained a degree with the help of one of the eight federal TRIO programs for low-income, first-generation students.<br><br>\u201c<strong>Upward Bound<\/strong> saved my life!\u201d said <strong>Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford<\/strong>. He arrived at the hotel after introducing <strong>Vice President Kamala Harris<\/strong> at another event, but his vivid childhood memories seemed far removed from his current success. Instead of hanging out with the neighborhood dope dealers and getting shot, I took a practice SAT with <strong>Upward Bound<\/strong>.\u201d Ford now has five degrees, including a law degree and a doctorate.<br><br><strong>Kiesha King<\/strong>, the senior national education administrator at <strong>T-Mobile<\/strong> and a graduate of <strong>Arizona State University<\/strong>, was recognized for her pioneering, years-long efforts to connect low-income students to the Internet at no cost to their families. Her family didn\u2019t have the $5. \u201cI needed an advocate at that moment. It was easy for me to become discouraged,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, she found an advocate in the <strong>Upward Bound<\/strong> program. \u201c<strong>Upward Bound<\/strong> helped me understand what I wanted,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to tell every little girl who looks like me that TRIO works,\u201d she said.<br><br><strong>Marinilda Rivera Diaz<\/strong> is the professor and coordinator of the doctoral program in public health at the <strong>University of Puerto Rico<\/strong> and is known for her work on health disparities among the poor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"862\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8877-1024x862.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1955\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8877-1024x862.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8877-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8877-768x647.jpg 768w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8877-1536x1294.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8877-1282x1080.jpg 1282w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8877-250x211.jpg 250w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8877.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>\u201cIn 1993, I walked into that tower of the smart ones,\u201d Diaz said, and by her third year, she became a <strong>McNair Scholar<\/strong>. \u201cWhen you give an opportunity to one, you help an entire community,\u201d she said.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivera Diaz became a TRIO student at the University of Puerto Rico\u2019s <strong>Educational Opportunity Center<\/strong>, but long before, as a child, she and her mother passed the campus with its distinctive clock tower. Her mother said, \u201cThat is where the smart ones go to school.\u201d \u201cIn 1993, I walked into that tower of the smart ones,\u201d Diaz said, and by her third year, she became a <strong>McNair Scholar<\/strong>. \u201cWhen you give an opportunity to one, you help an entire community,\u201d she said.<br><br><strong>James Monteiro<\/strong>, a graduate of <strong>Roger Williams College<\/strong>, spent 20 years in and out of prisons, earning an associate\u2019s degree in psychology while incarcerated with the help of the <strong>Educational Opportunity Center<\/strong> at <strong>Rhode Island College<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"785\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8882-1024x785.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8882-1024x785.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8882-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8882-768x588.jpg 768w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8882-1536x1177.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8882-1410x1080.jpg 1410w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8882-250x192.jpg 250w, https:\/\/coenet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/COE_TRIODinner-8882.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Eventually, he became determined to succeed, and, once he earned his degree, he started two non-profit organizations, one which helps prisoners and the other which helps teenagers. \u201cAfter getting a degree, I haven\u2019t had to look back. Once you have freedom, you want to give it to someone else,\u201d he concluded.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first time I was incarcerated, I got help from an educational opportunity director,\u201d Monteiro said, and that offer of help stayed with him and motivated him to take courses in prison. But after he served his first prison sentence, he said, \u201cI was released with an 8th-grade education without a leg to stand on.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, he became determined to succeed, and, once he earned his degree, he started two non-profit organizations, one which helps prisoners and the other which helps teenagers. \u201cAfter getting a degree, I haven\u2019t had to look back. Once you have freedom, you want to give it to someone else,\u201d he concluded.<br><br><strong>Sarah Smarsh<\/strong> is a best-selling author and acclaimed journalist whose 2018 book, <em>Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Going Broke in the Richest Country on Earth<\/em>, was a finalist for the National Book Award. It is about vocabulary, cultural understanding, and inherited ease in a given space. I would never have applied to graduate school if <strong>McNair <\/strong>hadn\u2019t encouraged me because it was a bigger dream than I ever had for myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<section
