When their international flight to <strong>Amsterdam <\/strong>could not be rebooked for four days, they pivoted to virtual learning and then made the most of their compressed stay in the <strong>Netherlands <\/strong>this summer. Ultimately, the short-term program, the first time abroad for most, made a huge impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI gained different perspectives as a student and from a different world point of view,\u201d said <strong>Pooja Patel<\/strong>, a TRIO <strong>Student Support Services (SSS) <\/strong>participant at the <strong>University of Kentucky<\/strong>. \u201cI gained a lot of insight into what I am capable of becoming in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI gained different perspectives while learning who I want to continue to be in the world. I learned the value in understanding we are all in life together,\u201d said <strong>Shelly Hoffman<\/strong>, who graduated from <strong>Grays Harbor Colleg<\/strong>e and will work in the TRIO <strong>SSS <\/strong>office there.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<section id=\"block-46889206a857958541733f88ab429b5c\" class=\"cta-pullout-wrapper cta-pullout alignfull coe-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"cta-pullout-inner wow animate fade-in-stagger\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"cta-text\">Learn more about COE&#8217;s opportunities for students and recent alumni.<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/coenet.org\/student-opportunities\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"acf-link button cta-pullout-button\" >LEARN MORE AND APPLY<\/a>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jayde Fernandez-Curry<\/strong> of <strong>Miami-Dade College<\/strong> and <strong>Freddy Garcia<\/strong> of <strong>Texas Christian University<\/strong> described making \u201cforever friends\u201d among their travel mates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 15 TRIO college students and their two group leaders participated in the summer program offered by COE and its partners, <a href=\"https:\/\/echo-net.nl\/en\/\">ECHO<\/a>, a non-profit organization specializing in diversity policy in Higher Education, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehagueuniversity.com\">The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS)<\/a>, from <strong>June 25 <\/strong>to <strong>July 16<\/strong>, 2022. This was the second year of the collaboration. Previous study abroad programs offered by COE and its partners since 2000 have taken place in <strong>South Africa<\/strong>, the <strong>UK<\/strong>, and <strong>Spain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the first part of the program, students were immersed in an introduction to the multiethnic culture of the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong>. They discussed the Dutch educational system, student empowerment, and cultural capital while living in a small village in northern <strong>Holland <\/strong>near the coastal dunes. Then the group traveled to <strong>The Hague<\/strong>, the seat of government for the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong>, where they met other international students enrolled at The Hague Summer School and took classes on global migration, entrepreneurship and sustainability, and blockchain technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Keith Sherin Global Leaders program helps level the playing field by making it possible for low-income, first-generation students to have these experiences.<\/p>\n<cite>Maureen Hoyler, COE President<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all of the learning took place in the classroom. Students participated in a beach cleanup, visited local museums, and enjoyed a boat ride on Amsterdam\u2019s canals. During a free weekend, some of the group explored neighboring Dutch cities, while others hopped on trains to visit Berlin and Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudy abroad and internships have become a rite of passage for students with means,\u201d said COE President <strong>Maureen Hoyler<\/strong>. \u201cThe Keith Sherin Global Leaders program helps level the playing field by making it possible for low-income, first-generation students to have these experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Keith Sherin, Global Leaders Program is named for <strong>Keith Sherin<\/strong>, former Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer of <strong>General Electric<\/strong>, who has generously supported COE\u2019s study abroad and internship program offerings for TRIO college students.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<section
