Federal TRIO programs help,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/pellinstitute.org\/downloads\/publications-Indicators_of_Higher_Education_Equity_in_the_US_2022_Historical_Trend_Report.pdf\">but they serve just a small percentage of the millions of students who qualify<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter former first-generation student, TRIO alumna, and entrepreneur&nbsp;<strong>Tiffany Green<\/strong>. She has developed a high-tech approach to help under-resourced students navigate the daunting college admissions process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green is the founder and CEO of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uprootedacademy.org\/\">Uprooted Academy<\/a>. Its platform combines dozens of conversational videos explaining different components of the application process, which high school students can access at any time, along with digital workbooks. Her technology covers dozens of college application topics, such as how to write a successful student essay, evaluate a college website, and financial literacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform supports organizations that already have college counseling in place. Green\u2019s company has contracts with school systems, individual schools, and TRIO programs around the country. In return, their high school seniors may use the platform for a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<section id=\"block-62962bb1808d9\" class=\"cta-pullout-wrapper cta-pullout alignfull coe-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"cta-pullout-inner wow animate fade-in-stagger\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"cta-text\">Join the online National TRIO Alumni Association community to network with TRIO alumni from around the world.<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/trio-alumni.hivebrite.com\/signup\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"acf-link button cta-pullout-button\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JOIN THE NETWORK<\/a>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen working with first-generation students, the information gap is wide,\u201d Green said. \u201cYou have to explain concepts over and over. Counselors get burned out because they are explaining things multiple times.\u201d The website\u2019s step-by-step information for students&nbsp;helps alleviate the anxiety and fear that the multi-step college application ordeal triggers in students, particularly those who are the first in the family to face this challenging process. \u201cWe are the only college platform that combines mental health with college prep,\u201d Green said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green explained that when faced with a daunting challenge, \u201cour nervous system will either fight, flee or freeze. And no population experiences fear over the college application process like low-income, first-generation students,\u201d she said. Students experiencing this anxiety may seem to teachers or other adults like they don\u2019t care, but they do; inside, they are trying to cope with their fear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that first-generation students and students of color are not working hard,&#8221; Green said. \u201cThey are working\u00a0<em>wrong<\/em>. They don\u2019t know how to be competitive. We want to mirror what wealthier students have when they go to a college application boot camp.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green is in many of the videos, giving information laced with pep talks. \u201cExcitement and anxiety are cousins &#8211; two sides of the same coin,\u201d she says in one. She also addresses the lack of confidence many students feel. \u201cPut shame aside,\u201d she says in another. \u201cJust because you don\u2019t know something, don\u2019t feel like you should know it.
